President Nana Addo Danquah Akufo-Addo has appointed a nine-member Board of Directors to steer the affairs of Ghana Tourism Development Company (GTDC)
The appointees include Radia Adama Saani, Chief Executive Officer of Moontouch Group who doubles as Head of Corporate Affairs of Africa Tour Operators Alliance – ATOA.
Prior to her appointment, she was selected, as the country representative of the African Association of Women in Tourism & Hospitality, a USA – Ghanaian based Tourism Organisation.
The other Board of Directors appointed by the President are Mr Kwadwo Odame Antwi, Mr Tamimu Osman, Mrs Jacqueline Akufo, Mr Vitus-Otoo Langmgne, Mr Akwasi Owusu Agyeman, Mr Philip Abradu-Otoo and Mr Stephen Kwame Oduro.
Speaking at the swearing-in ceremony, which took place at the premises of the Ghana Tourism Authority, Dr Mohammed Ibrahim Awal, Minister for Tourism, Arts & Culture, urged the newly-inaugurated Board of Directors of the Ghana Tourism Development Company to create opportunities for the tourism industry.
These opportunities, he noted, should translate into jobs through relevant tourism businesses as the company connects with relevant ancillary industries.
According to the Minister, creating jobs along the tourism value chain would make Ghana the tourism hub of Africa.
He asked the Board of Directors to make tourism the number one contributor to Ghana’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) through the development of innovative ideas to improve domestic and international tourism for national development.
Dr Ibrahim Mohammed Awal subsequently administered the oath of office and secrecy to the 9 member Board of Directors of the state-owned company.
He said statistically, Ghana was 3rd in West Africa after Gambia and Senegal in terms of tourism growth and that it shouldn’t be so, “We need to be 1st in tourism considering that Ghana is one of the most peaceful countries in the world with our strong democracy and good governance structures”
The Chairman of the Board of Directors, Mr Kwame Acheampong Boateng, responded to the Minister’s call and promised that the Board would perform beyond expectation within the first three months of taking office and beyond as instructed by the Minister.
He commended the former Board of Directors for their selfless contribution to the sector and urged the new Board to help him and the team cultivate a culture of results in appreciation of the opportunity offered them.
